Relearning Canasta |

When I was young my grandmother and I played Canasta several times, but I've since forgotten how to play. Are there any official rules sites I should know about?

newbie question |
[17 Feb 2005|07:23pm] |
Hello! So, my wife and I discovered Canasta in one of our game books, and we're totally into it. Obviously we play to two-handed version, but we're stumped about one thing - none of our game books mention it, and I was hoping maybe someone here could answer us.
Now, I know you can't go out until you have two Canastas, and I know you must always keep at least one card in your hand until you go out - so, my question: do you always HAVE to discard? For example: You have four cards in your hand, and three of them can be melded. If you meld the three cards that leaves you with only one: you can't discard that one, becuase then you're left with no cards. Does this mean you have to discard instead of melding? Or can you meld your three cards, and then simply say, "I can't discard"?

Some of you may not know it, but there is this really great game site called pogo.com. I LOVE IT! I have always hated that they don't have canasta, though. Well this morning I went to their site and very soon they will start doing canasta there. WOO HOO! That is where you will find me playing canasta most of the time then. I'm sure it will have great options! Just updating everyone.
Take care of you for me!

Man, I just CANNOT win lately! I haven't won a game in at least a week, and I've played at least 10 games. Thats couting online, and in person. It really sucks. And its not like I'm even close to winning. I'm way off, with scores like 5000 to 2000. This is my worst slump ever!
Yeah. So tell me. Do you get into winning or losing streaks?

Game Nights! |
[01 Jul 2004|10:59pm] |
Alright Ladies and Gents,
On the topic of game nights.... It seems that everyone wants to have games every night, and have an entry with all the Yahoo IDs on it for easy access. (the tally was 5-5)
We have apparently already had a successful game! Woo!
If you want your Yahoo! ID to be available to other canastalovers, then comment on this entry. I'll make a spiffy(er) protected entry for convenience, okay? Okay.
Unless people want to vote on it (feel free to speak up)...game times from 5-10 pm (EST, I figure that's a good medium for people). I know that's kind of a big gap, but I figure that if people are wanting to play, they will post an entry looking for partners and stating what room they'll be in and for how long. And while the person is waiting...they could play in an unrated game untill someone shows up and says something along the lines of...'hey I'm from canastalovers, wanna play?'
Any questions, comments, complaints etc...just speak up! :)

Greetings, all. I'm David, and I've forgotten just how old I was when I learned how to play. Apparently canasta is sort of a tradition in my family, at least on my dad's side--I've been told they used to have big games about once every week or two, before I was born. My grandma used to love to play, and I guess it rubbed off on my dad, who got me addicted, in addition to my brother and sister. Generally, we play canasta when we go visit our small cabin in the mountains--we have a little wooden table there that's basically just used for card games. I'm always ready for another game, even when it seems like nobody else is!
One thing I like about canasta is how progressive it is--how you can start with absolutely nothing and then build up an unstoppable flood of cards... plus there's just something indescribable about seeing the player to your right slowly discard a deuce with that regretful look in their eye. When we played, you always knew when players were getting frustrated because they would accuse you of wandering eyes, winking at your partner, twitching, etc. Yet it's also fun when you're on another side of the table. Not many card games I've played can so well combine feelings of suspense, satisfaction, at times a sort of apathetic frustration and possibly even oneness as well as canasta can. I'm much more familiar with classic canasta, as I guess it's called, than the other rules sets. But it's always fun to play with someone else and see how the rules they learned to play by differ. Although as for the wildcard melding, I've never had the infamous wildcard hand in the first place, so that's kind of hard to say. A canasta community--awesome idea! I can't wait to see how it plays out, no pun intended of course ;) !

Alright, so we are up to 31 members in a matter of 2(ish) days! I'd say that's pretty damn good!
About the game nights...lets take a vote/votes.
Where to play... Is everyone agreeing with Yahoo!Games? Any other free hostings you'd prefer?
Should we... A. Have a game night once a week, and vote on the best day for everyone.
B. Have game nights every other day, so as to include more people and quench the ever lingering Canasta craving.
C. Have game nights every night, and if you're going to play, post in the community so that people wont be waiting.
D. Make a friends only post in the community of everyones Yahoo! I.D.s, so that if you want to play, you can check Yahoo! to see if anyone from the community is online.
E. Other.
For A, B, and C we would of course agree on specific rooms/lounges and general time frames. All right, let the voting begin!
